What is a Sports Massage?

Man getting a sports massage

Sports massage therapy is a systematic way of massaging the soft tissues of the body to reduce muscular tension, discomfort, and pain. It is aimed to:

  1. Keep you in optimal condition

  2. Address pain or injuries from your usual physical activities

  3. Improve flexibility and range of motion

A sports massage combines deep, sustained pressure and varied strokes for muscle release. Sometimes, your sports therapist may also include other techniques like pressure point or joint mobilization to aid your recovery.

What is the difference between a Sports Massage and a normal massage?

Sports massage back

Unlike normal massages, sports massages don’t usually include candles or aromatherapy. A sports massage is focused on releasing muscle tension using a thorough understanding of musculoskeletal, myofascial, and lymphatic systems.

They may also focus on different areas on the body. A sports massage mainly focuses on parts that are most injury prone or vulnerable to stress. Depending on the physical activity you engage in, that can either be shoulders, arm or legs. With a regular massage, you will likely receive a full body therapy.

While both types of massages promote relaxation and calmness, a sports massage is much more targeted for functional benefits like releasing tightness and recovery.

Other types of massages include Deep-tissue massages and Tuina. Deep-tissue massage is focused on chronic muscle pain caused by unhealthy or stressful living, and Tuina is targeted at promoting better blood circulation and removing energy blockages in your body.

Is Sports Massage only for athletes?

  • Do you want to hasten the healing and recovery process after an intense physical activity? E.g. a marathon race

  • Do you regularly engage in physical activities and want to reduce the likelihood of injury?

How do I choose a good Sports Massage Therapist?

Sports Massage Therapists

When someone says, “sports massage does not work for me,” more times than not they have not done their research in choosing a good sports massage therapist.

You need a trained therapist who can evaluate your condition and personalise the treatment and techniques you need. Therefore, at FHYSIO, our personalised massage therapy session begins with a complimentary consultation with our in-house physiotherapist who can design the right treatment plan.

When you are choosing your sports massage therapist, here are 5 things to look out for:

  1. They evaluate your current physical condition and ask about your goals

  2. Don’t use a cookie cutter approach with your sports massage

  3. Certified and trained in sports massage (or physiotherapy with added qualifications in sports massage) – and not generic massage therapists

  4. Transparent with their pricing and packages (a bonus if they have a first-time discount so you can try it out before you commit)

  5. Positive reviews from customers online

How much does a Sports Massage cost?

A good sports massage session usually runs for at least 60 mins and can cost from $100 to $180 depending on the therapist’s experience.

At FHYSIO, our 60 mins massage therapy (which includes a one-on-one consultation with our in-house physiotherapist) starts at $160 and we offer a 30% discount for first time customers.

What are some alternatives to Sports Massage?

If sports massage is not your thing, there are still other ways you reap some of its benefits. Here are 4 alternatives to consider.

Massage Ball and Foam Rollers

Balls and foam rollers are great for self-myofascial release to alleviate pain, tightness, and imbalance. Essentially, you can “massage” yourself and release tension from those trigger points and knots. At FHYSIO, we designed our own FHYball and FHYroller based on our decade long experience as physiotherapists.

FHYball ($34.95)

The FHYball is your new “best friend” in getting rid of muscle tensions like never before. With added bumps at the end, it stimulates deep tissue release, allowing you to soothe sore muscles anytime, anywhere. Great for applying more pressure to more targeted areas.

You can also learn how to use the FHYball as a self-myofascial release tool with our highly rated courses. It is fully accredited by the International Sports Science Association and upon completion, you will be certified by professionals.

FHYroller ($50)

FHYroller is a great tool for lengthening and elongating muscles. It is especially helpful for runners who often suffer from tight and fatigued muscles. Foam rolling also sends a signal to the brain to loosen muscles and increase blood flow to flush out any toxin.

Percussion Massage Guns

Percussion massage guns provide quick bursts of pressure into hyper targeted muscle areas. If you find massage balls or foam rollers difficult to use, this could be an easier solution

Do note that percussion massage guns don’t entirely eliminate muscle soreness, but it is very effective in increasing blood flow to the area which helps reduce tension and inflammation and relax your muscles. It’s suitable for both pre and post workout. We highly recommend Achedaway’s Pro Percussion and Vibration Massager.

Achedaway Pro Percussion and Vibration Massager ($349 Promotion, Usual Price $409)

The next generation of Achedaway’s Percussion Massager. Deeper, more powerful but still quiet. Built with 5 adjustable speed levels and experience 60% deeper percussive than other massage guns.

Cryotherapy

You’ve probably seen many professional athletes turn to these ice cold chambers to soothe their muscles post competition. If you have, that’s cryotherapy.

It is a treatment that uses near freezing temperature to help circulate blood flow around your body – which essentially delivers nutrients to your muscles and joints. Some of the reported benefits include faster recovery times, reduced inflammation, pain relief and greater flexibility. You can try it out at Cryo Fit at Far East Square.

Flotation Therapy

Some professional athletes swear by this - Tom Brady is known to have a float tank in his house and uses it for recovery. So, what is flotation therapy? You basically spend 45-60 minutes floating in small, pitch black chamber floating in a pool of water saturated with Epsom salt. You simply float and feel suspended in space.

By floating, the pressure of your weight and gravity on your muscles and joints are removed. The healing properties of Epsom salts, high in magnesium, also helps to relax and sooth muscles, reduce swelling and boost recovery. Not to mention, it’s a great way to destress!
